Welcome. I’m a designer…of pages, ceramics, textiles and more. I realized at some point that I really enjoy designing surfaces. Even when I’m working in clay I’m always thinking about the surface so my creative life is centered around designing surfaces while I continue to design for marketing communications and educational publishing. For more information on my textile designs and my graphic design work, or to contact me to fill a design need, visit my design web site at caroleallendesignstudio.com.
For this site, I chose to focus on ceramics. These pages are populated with examples of my work in ceramics and of my trip to Tuscany for a wonderful ceramics workshop.
Even when I was in college in Ohio studying art I gravitated towards fine crafts but I only had time for a taste of each discipline.
When I started a career as a graphic designer I found that I really needed to have that “hand-in-the-mud” experience and I began to look for ceramic artists I could study with.
For many years I studied with the late ceramics master artist, Makoto Yabe and assisting him in the ceramics studio at The DeCordova Museum. I have also worked with another wonderful ceramic artist Lisa Dolliver for years, owner of Earth Changes Pottery in Maynard, Massachusetts, and with Deb Schwartzkopf (now residing and working in Seattle) at Mass College of Art and Design. I love attending workshops and learning from such talented artists.
